Plot summary

The story takes place in Keijō (the present Seoul), in the Korean Peninsula under Imperial Japanese rule, in 1943. Being inferior in the Pacific War, the Japanese government decided to conscript Korean youths.

Seo Gyeontae, who has grown in Japan, comes back to Korea crossing the Genkai Sea. He begins working for a newspaper company, staying with his friend Paik Seongo, who has a pro-Japanese father.

One day, Seo Gyeontae’s Japanese lover, Kimiko Oi, crosses the sea to visit him. Her arrival stirs a deep conflict in his heart—between love and loyalty to his homeland.
Meanwhile, Lee Seungwon, a police officer, is tasked with cracking down on anti-Japanese resistance groups. Though he is Korean, he has already arrested many of Korean people as an agent of Imperial Japan.

Paik Seongo, who harbors resentment toward his father for making profit through the conspiracy with Japanese, also struggles to find his own path.

Seo Gyeontae, Paik Seongo, and Lee Seungwon—
three young men face difficult choices, being caught between their roles and their beliefs, in the time swept by the storm of imperialism.
